NGO mgt outline, Sept to December 2012

Basic Description/Course Objectives:
Overview: NGO 601 focuses on the development of the basic management skills needed to run a nonprofit NGO. Course themes include project, organizational structure, human resources, volunteer, development, funds, fundraising and day-to-day operations management. Online readings introduce basic skills, techniques, issues and case studies. This course is for anyone interested in developing their organizational skills and learning about nonprofit NGOs. Participants are expected to be active in class discussion, group work and complete a class project.

Evaluation: Participants will receive a “pass” for the course if they fulfill the criteria for passing: 70% in attendance, satisfactory coursework, class assignments and complete a paper and presentation. Class participants are expected to complete readings and/or other course work even if absent.

Course work: Active class participation includes discussion and preparation for class as well as completing the final class project. Class participants are expected to complete readings and/or other course work even if absent.

An open mind to understand diverse ways of seeing.
Business and Activist skills - admin, org mgt., advocacy, community outreach, research, care, arts, PR, cyber/IT etc.
Approaches at different levels - gov’t, bureaucracy, community, individual, groups
And you need a positive attitude and a lot of commitment -
social/global problems are not easily solved.

Basic information on the final presentation

Option 1 – can be done individually or teams of 2 or 3
Develop an outline for a nonprofit NGO.

Select 1 specific issue
Develop a complete outline for a new, fictional organization
Use the info and skills from each class.

Option 2 – can be done individually or teams of 2 or 3
Research 2-4 organizations working on one issue.

Focus on administration and management issues that we focus on in class.

Presentation in class 10:
10-12 minutes for 1 person / 20-24 min for a pair / 30-36 min for a trio
introduce your outline
cover all aspects 
* powerpoint or handouts should be sent via email by Thirsday night before the class.

* Final Project/presentation ideas: please work on your ideas a bit more.
please try to define before class 4. we will also have progress check
in class 6.

* Remember the project will not focus on the problem but org mgt issues.
You can select option 1 or 2 - but for option #1 you will need to be
in direct contact with orgs to get detailed information.
