Basic Description/Course Objective
Overview: NGO 601 focuses on the development of the basic management skills needed to run a nonprofit NGO. Course themes include project, organizational structure, human resources, volunteer, development, funds, fundraising and day-to-day operations management. Online readings introduce basic skills, techniques, issues and case studies. This course is for anyone interested in developing their organizational skills and learning about nonprofit NGOs.
Textbook : Capacity building for local NGOs: A guidance manual for good practice.
(An online NGO toolkit, plus other online articles for each weekly topic.)

Evaluation: Participants will receive a "pass" for the course if they fulfill the criteria for passing: 70% in attendance, active class participation, satisfactory coursework, assignments and completing an individual paper and group presentation.
Course work: Active class participation includes preparation for class, asking questions, engaging in group and class discussions and as well as completing the final class project. Class participants are expected to complete readings and/or other course work even if absent.

Share know-how and experience with other class participants
Each group will: Give a presentation & Prepare hand-outs or PPT for other class participants.
Each person will: Submit a final paper (approx. 10 pages)

Participants will be encouraged to consider a variety of solutions to specific problems organizations face and will be given the opportunity to design cross-sector approaches to these problems. The course we will use online readings to introduce techniques, issues and case studies. Participants are expected to be active in class discussion, take part in group work and complete a final class project.
Evaluation: Participants will receive a pass if they fulfill the criteria for passing: 70% in attendance and satisfactory coursework.
Course work: Active class participation includes discussion and preparation for class as well as completing the final class project. Class participants are expected to complete readings and/or other course work even if absent.
