NGO 601 Course outline - Fall 2007

Nonprofit NGO Management - aspects and issues organisations face (NGO 601)
Schedule: Mondays 19:10 -21:00, (see exact dates below)
Textbook: Readings will be allocated throughout the course
Objectives: Develop skills for organizing & managing a Nonprofit NGO.

Overview: NGO 601 is a course for anyone interested in developing more professional skills and learning about the management of nonprofit NGOs. Participants will be encouraged to consider a variety of solutions to specific problems organizations face and will be given the opportunity to design cross-sector approaches to these problems. The course we will use online readings to introduce techniques, issues and case studies. Participants are expected to be active in class discussion, take part in group work and complete a final class project.

Evaluation: Participants will receive a pass if they fulfill the criteria for passing: 70% in attendance and satisfactory coursework.

Course work: Active class participation includes discussion and preparation for class as well as completing the final class project. Class participants are expected to complete readings and/or other course work even if absent.

Oct. 1: Introduction to course and nonprofit NGO mgt. Mission, Vision, Value and Principles

Oct. 15: Organisational leadership and Human Resource Management.

Oct 22: Project mgt#1 Needs assessment, Project planning

Oct 29: Guest speaker
– Dave Mori on nonprofit NGO entrepreneurship and importance of networking and outreach

Nov 5: Project implementation, branding and PR

Nov. 12: Business plans and grant proposals

Nov. 19: Fundraising and Financial management.

Nov 26: Project monitoring and evaluation.

Dec 3: Guest speaker?

Dec 10: Presentation and review.

Final assignment information: All are required to work in groups of 2 or 3 over the course of the semester to develop an outline for a proposed organization. Each group will do a final presentation and each person submit their own paper.
Objectives: Hands on use of skills studied in class
Chance to share know how and experience with class participants

Each group will:
* Give a 10-minute presentation; you will also have 5-10min. for Q & A.
* Prepare hand-out for your class mates – either one page outline or PowerPoint slides.
* A PowerPoint presentation is NOT required.

Each person will:
* Submit a final paper

Due date: for written materials and presentation: Dec 8
